Burned CD problems with car player
10:52 PM, MONDAY, APRIL 30, 2007

Lately my car's CD player had been refusing to play burned CDs. It used to play burned CDs just fine - only about a year ago, and I was convinced there is nothing wrong with my CD player, and here's why.

  • The CDs I burned now won't play past the 3rd or 4th track, but it will play the 1st few track just fine.

  • Non-burned CDs will play without any problems.

  • CDs that I burned about 2 years ago will still play great.

  • Armed with this information I was convinced that it's the quality of the CDs that's in question. So I bought some pretty expensive recordable CDs and tried the experiment again. My theory didn't hold true for long.

Contemplating what might have changed over the years, I realized that I'm burning these CDs with the new burner that came with my new PC. So, I tried burning the CDs from my work PC and that didn't work either.

Now, I was completely confused. What else could have changed in the last years? It then struck me that the burn speed on these CDs is close to 50x, which is definitely much faster than about 2 years ago. After the short ephiphanic moment, I burnt a new CD with the slowest speed possible on my burner. That was it - now my car's player can play the CD just perfectly again.

Weird how burn speed compromises on the quality of burn.

    10:49 PM, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18, 2007

Before I can grab enough time to write in detail about my trip I thought, based on popular demand, I'll post some pictures. Here goes...

Colorful toys at the Artisan's Market.

At the Valhalla Macadamia Nut Farm in Antigua.

    Macadamia Nuts.

Namooru auto. They call it the Tuc Tuc!

Many different varieties of Mangoes - just like good old Kalapet.

What hath Saving Daylight giveth us?
    9:46 AM, TUESDAY, APRIL 03, 2007

Remember my gripes with daylight saving time? Here's one. And here's another one where I talked about the change in the DST schedule.

If they were putting people through this nonsensical silliness, you'd think they'd done enough research to show some huge savings in energy (that being their primary excuse). Well, so much for this theory - it seems that the early daylight savings time has no apparent energy savings whatsoever.
